Best New Games for Android

What are the latest games worth checking out in the Google Play Store?

Some weeks it's difficult to find great new games worth sharing with the AC community. This is not one of those weeks.

Update September 22, 2017: Race around deliver data packets in the retro-cool DATA WING! Then, just try and not to get drawn into a trance playing Push & Pop. Conquer kingdoms in the strategic card collecting game Stormbound: Kingdom Wars!

DATA WING

You should never judge a book by its cover or a mobile game by its icon, and DATA WING is a fantastic example of just that. When you first come across this game in the Google Play Store, you might assume it to be some sort of Asteroids knock-off or something based on the familiar triangle spaceship design — and you would be dead wrong.

In actuality, DATA WING is a really engaging, story-driven racing game, drenched in highly stylized neon colors and backed by an amazing soundtrack. You play a little data-delivery ship that exists within the confines of a 16-year-old girls smartphone who seemingly exists to help a sentient program gain more access to the system. The gameplay is simple with two-touch controls to steer and awesome physics that let you thrust-boost along the walls. There's a great variety of levels to play through with little easter eggs of content to discover throughout.

The story feels somewhat inspired by Portal, in that you're just kind of thrown into this world by an omnipotent computer guide that you never can quite fully trust. It's one of the best games I've discovered in 2017 and definitely worth checking it out!

Push & Pop

I'll fully admit the first time I loaded up Push & Pop it legit drew me into a deep trance. Be forewarned: this is one trippy game.

The premise is dead simple. You swipe around to slide your sprite around the 5-by-5 grid, pushing blocks as you go, with the aim of clearing out lines and collecting points. You just keep playing until you get boxed in and can't move. As you progress further and further, the visuals and music get more intense and layered.

I suppose you could play this game nice and slow and be strategic about every move, but I swear once you get into this game, you just start instinctively swiping around and things just fall into place. This is kind of one of those mindless casual games you can play for hours if you're not careful about it, and there are very few ads to break up that gameplay.

Stormbound: Kingdom Wars

Stormbound: Kingdom Wars was previously available only in select countries as part of a soft launch in the Google Play Store, but is now available for the whole world to check out. It's a card collecting game that has you battling on a chess-like game board with the ultimate goal of advancing your troops across the board and destroying your enemies base.

Each turn, you get a limited amount of mana to cast cards onto the playing field (a very familiar game mechanic to Hearthstone), and you'll need to employ the right strategies to win.

There's a single-player campaign in which you battle against four distinct kingdoms and collect cards for your deck, along with a battle arena for taking on other players in PvP matches. It's an interesting strategy game with sharp graphics. If you love games like Hearthstone, it's definitely worth your time to check out Stormbound.
