Dodge endless waves of colorful enemies in Bullet Hell Monday

It's been a while since I last found a really great shoot 'em up for Android, and that was Sky Force Reloaded which is challenging and fun — but it barely holds a candle to the insanity that is Bullet Hell Monday.

Bullet hell (or danmaku in Japanese) is a subgenre of shoot em up games which, as TVTropes.org so eloquently states, tests "both your dodging skills and your resistance to seizures." Touché.

Suffice it to say, this game is fast and furious with vivid colors and frantic gameplay that will really test your dodging skills. It's downright nutty at times — just watch the trailer above to get a sense for the cascade of craziness you need to dodge.

The good news is that the controls are perfect for mobile: you simply tap and hold to control your ship, which automatically shoots up towards the enemies. Tap with a second finger and you unleash a bomb that's pretty good for clearing out waves of enemies, although you are rewarded for not using bombs and achieving maximum destruction. Between levels, you can spend your credits on upgrades for your ship, bombs, and weapons, while other permanent upgrades are available through in-app purchases. The game developers have also implemented voluntary video ads for earning extra credits, but they never interfere with the flow of the actual game.

Bullet Hell Monday starts out with a chapter mode that features 50 levels of increasing difficulty, but you're upgrading your ship as you progress so things get more frantic and manageable at the same time. Beyond that, there are Challenge Mode and Endless Mode which are unlocked as you progress through the game and are designed to really challenge hardcore fans of this genre. Check it out if you love crazy shoot em up games — and aren't prone to epilepsy.
