Buy a new Android phone at Verizon and get a $200 prepaid MasterCard

Pick your favorite phone.

Buy a new phone at Verizon and you can get a $200 prepaid MasterCard. The available phones include all the latest and greatest from Android: the Samsung Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10s, Galaxy S10+, Galaxy Note9, LG V40 ThinQ, LG G8 ThinQ, Google Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Red Hydrogen One, or the Moto Z3. Pick any one of those phones and sign up for a new line of service on Verizon Unlimited. After you make your purchase, go to Verizon's Promotion Center website and enter the code APRILSWITCH. You'll have some other info you need to fill out, but in about eight weeks you'll get your MasterCard.

Want to save $450 more? Trade in a select device, like your old phone, within 30 days of your above purchase. Verizon will give you a $450 promo credit if you're adding a new line. Older phones (like the Galaxy S7 and earlier) max out at $300. The credit will be applied to your account over the course of 24 months. You can also save this way if you're upgrading from an existing line. Verizon will give $200 for trade-ins for upgrades or $100 for older phones. By the way, the list of select devices is pretty extensive and includes dozens of iPhone and Android models.

When we reviewed the Pixel 3, we gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars, and called it The Best. So much about this phone is outstanding, including the extremely accurate OLED touchscreen displays, the design that includes a back made of Gorilla Glass 5 so it's durable but still supports wireless charging, and the 12.2MP camera with improved HDR+ processing.

The reviewer called the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL easy recommendations for the best Android phone: "I can recommend them without qualms or caveats, because they're just so good at doing the things everyone wants from a modern smartphone — whether they're a novice or an expert — without show-stopping issues, problems, or tricks to learn. That's the beauty of buying a Google Pixel."

Sprint also has a deal on the Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+. Get the S10e for $15 a month, the S10 for $20 a month, or the S10+ for $25 a month on Sprint's Flex Lease 18-month plan. After that time is up, you can return the phone and upgrade to a new model or buy the rest of the price of the phone. The S10e is normally $31.25 a month, so you're saving $16.25 a month. The deal is applied within two bills. It requires a new line of service and approved credit. You'll have to pay the remaining balance if you cancel early.

Read more about the Galaxy S10 series, if that's the phone you're interested in. Much like the Pixel 3, we also gave the S10 4.5 stars and a The Best recommendation. It has one of the best smartphone displays we've ever seen, powerful technology, and three cameras that include one 16MP ultra wide-angle camera you'll just want to mess around with. The review said, "the Galaxy S10 gets as close as possible to fulfilling the promise of being the best phone for the widest range of people out there" and reviewer Andrew Martonik added, "I can recommend a Galaxy S10 or S10+ to anyone and not worry that it'll be missing something they want or rely on in a modern high-end smartphone."

Expand your network's reach with a Google Wifi router at its new $99 price

Sometimes, one is all you need.

Google sells its mesh Wi-Fi system in one and three packs by default, though you can customize the systems to meet the needs of your home pretty easily. The single router normally sells for $129, and the 3-pack has settled down at around $259 recently. We tend to see various discounts on the 3-pack that bring it down to around the $250 mark, but the single unit usually tends to just sit around its full retail price, or drop by only a few bucks. If you don't have a large home or want to expand your current setup of Google Wifi routers, today's the day to do it as the price of the single Google Wifi just dropped to $99 at Amazon and other retailers!

Faster Speeds

These are the best messaging services you can use on Android

Communicating on your phone has gone far beyond simple SMS messages and voice calls. We have social messengers, secret messengers, professional messengers and power-packed messengers, so it can be difficult to settle on which services are worth your time. If you need a little help deciding what to use to ask your friends if they're free for coffee or ranting with gifs about the latest episode and what morons you favorite characters are being, here are our favorites.

Adaptable and data-light

WhatsApp Messenger

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messengers in the world, with encrypted multimedia chat, VoIP voice and video calls, and a drop dead setup. We liked WhatsApp more before it got bought by Facebook, but the service itself is still decent, widely-used, and in many places is more reliable than SMS, so it's still well worth its spot as our top recommendation.

Free at Google Play

Simplified security

Signal Private Messenger

Signal has been one of the most well-trusted secure messaging systems on the block for years. It's absolutely free and uses end-to-end encryption protocol to ensure your privacy with every message you send. It uses your already existing phone number, so there are no extra hoops to jump through like a new password or username.

Free at Google Play

For professionals and pro-memers

Slack

We've used Slack for our in-company chatting for as long as I've worked at Android Central, and I was shocked to learn that Slack was available for regular users alongside its corporate use, but whether you just want to Slack your classmates with some choice gifs or need to talk to your boss about your schedule, Slack is awesome and I love it.

Free at Google Play

Get your game chat on

Discord

Discord is part IRC chat, part message board, and all awesome. It's aimed more at group chatting than individual chats, but it's available on just about any platform you can think of, it's easy to manage, share, and moderate, and its gamer-centric focus has made it a very, very responsive service that's quick to update and expand.

Free at Google Play

A favorite from Asia

LINE: Free Calls & Messages

LINE might not be as popular in the West (yet), but this Japan-based service is one of the most popular in Asia, with over 600 million users and a whole suite of communication, payment, and gaming apps under the LINE name. LINE is well-made and easy to use, but it's been slow to spread in America, even with its nine adorable mascots.

Free at Google Play

I'm not dying

Hangouts

Reports of Hangouts impending "death" are highly exaggerated, and while the classic Hangouts app might be sunset in a few years, the Hangouts service will continue with Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet, the latter of which we've been enjoying for our team meetings for months. Hangouts is still one of the easiest to adopt, since it uses your Google account.

Free at Google Play

Because everyone has Facebook

Facebook Messenger

Facebook has done some pretty despicable things in the last few years, but Facebook Messenger continues to be one of the more-used messenger apps around by the simple value of everyone and their grandmother having a Facebook account. It has some nice features, but it also has some annoying and invasive ones, too.

Free at Google Play

Snap it

Snapchat

Snapchat may be better classified as a social media network, but Snapchat is based around messaging and millions fell in love with its self-deleting photos and ease of use as a way to trash talk frenemies, send pictures/videos that you don't want spreading around school, and of course its many selfie filters.

Free at Google Play

Security is paramount

Even if all you're intending to do on your messaging service is talk to some buddies and maybe plan some jewel heists— I mean surprise parties — you should care about your messaging service being secure and trustworthy. Of the 8 services listed here, all but LINE support two-factor authentication, and several of them support encryption for messages, including Whatsapp, Signal, and Snapchat.

Self-deleting messages and notifications of when messages are screenshotted or reshared gives Snapchat some extra appearance of security, but there are ways around those protocols and Snapchat's had issues of self-deleting photos not getting deleted from their servers before. On the other hand, the ability to delete specific messages permanently from a group chat is nice feature on Signal that I wish would come to more services, but at least services like Whatsapp having the ability to unsend a message a few minutes after an accidental send is nice.

How many friends can you convince to switch?

The problem with picking a messenger app is that usually you can't just use one. Some friends will be on Facebook, some will be on Whatsapp, and there's that one weirdo that still uses Hangouts — my family still uses Hangouts just about every day for our group chats. You can try and guide your friends towards one platform or another, but remember that you may need to compromise and pick a platform your friends already use.

AT&T expands 5G coverage to 7 additional cities

Everything you need to know about the next big thing when it comes to mobile broadband.

5G is coming, but most of us aren't really sure what it is or why we want it. A big part of the reason is that 5G means more than one thing, and depending on who you ask you'll get different answers. That makes it a lot like 4G, which was equal part marketing term as well as real technology.

Technically speaking, 5G is the next generation of broadband connection. At first, 5G will live beside and enhance your current 4G service, but soon enough 5G-only networks will be complete and stand-alone 5G devices will be available. With any type of 5G connection, you'll see faster network speeds, but the biggest changes will happen when carriers have all deployed high-frequency millimeter wave technology to tap radio wavelengths that have been unusable in the past.

We're already seeing carriers put 5G networks into place for testing and evaluation. Both "real" 5G networks and fake 5G networks like AT&T's 5G Evolution network that's really just 4G with extra bandwidth. But because of how 4G LTE is going to be enhanced by and eventually replaced with 5G, it will be a while until everything is up and running and "real" 5G is everywhere.

The latest 5G news

April 9, 2019 — AT&T expands 5G coverage to 7 additional cities

AT&T has just expanded its 5G coverage to seven additional cities for a whopping total of 19 total cities with 5G capabilities. That's more than any other network can claim at this time. The new cities added to the list include Austin, Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose.

It's important to note that the 5G coverage is only in parts of these cities, and not citywide, as well as there are no 5G capable phones currently available for AT&T at this time. For now, if you wanted to take advantage of those 5G speeds, your only option would be to buy the NETGEAR Nighthawk 5G mobile hotspot from AT&T.

It won't be until later this year before we see the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G make its debut on AT&T, along with another 5G phone expected from Samsung before the year is over. That will give AT&T customers a total of three 5G devices to choose from by the end of 2019, but until then, your options are rather limited with only the NETGEAR Nighthawk 5G mobile hotspot up for grabs.

February 26, 2019 — Qualcomm's 2020 processor will have a 5G modem built-in

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 processor is full of technological achievements, one of which is that it supports 5G. However, in order for a phone with the 855 to actually connect to 5G networks, it needs a separate modem from Qualcomm.

With the company's next flagship processor coming out in 2020, Qualcomm wants to eliminate that hurdle by integrating 5G connectivity right into the chip itself.

Per Qualcomm's President, Cristiano Amon:

Our R&D and leading mobile platforms enable phone manufacturers to innovate and scale groundbreaking products globally. The integration of our breakthrough 5G multimode modem and application processing technologies into a single SoC is a major step in making 5G more widely available across regions and tiers following the wave of flagship 5G devices from the more than 20 OEMs and 20 mobile operators who have committed to launching 5G networks and mobile handsets based on our 5G modems this year.

This will, hopefully, allow for smartphones to support 5G speeds without having exorbitant price tags or overly thick/heavy designs. However, it'll be a while before any of that happens.

Qualcomm says that the new chip with be sent out in samples in Q2 2019, meaning that phones won't be released with it until the first half of 2020.

All the big details

All about the frequency

Think of 5G as broken into two parts — I'll call them low-frequency 5G and high-frequency 5G.

Low-frequency networks will use the same radio bands that current technology uses, but changes to signal encoding (primarily channel polarization which Huawei used to obtain 27Gbps speeds using existing networks) and wider channel bands will allow for speeds up to 50% better than the best 4G LTE network has to offer today.

Networks using these changes will also still be able to have the same range that they currently have, which means no additional cell sites are needed to maintain the same network footprint. Some new equipment will need to be installed at existing sites, though, and carriers are getting everything 5G-ready in preparation.

New ways to compress and send data can make 4G seem as fast as 5G, but the real innovation requires microwaves.

But the newer — and better — technology behind 5G is using higher-frequency spectrum. Spectrum available in wavelengths like 28GHz allows for very fast and very "wide" channels for broadband service to communicate over because they aren't congested and clogged by devices that use it today. Known as millimeter wave frequency, these channels have one significant drawback — the signals don't travel nearly as far as the lower-frequency signals do.

We see this in action today. Verizon's 4G LTE service uses narrower bands than Sprint. When the network isn't crowded with plenty of customers, Verizon will have higher speeds once you travel further away from a cell site. This is because Sprint's wider signal just doesn't travel as far or penetrate solid substances as well.

Faster connections usually don't have much range.

Your home Wi-Fi router is an even better example. 802.11 a/b/g 2.4GHz networks use narrow 20MHz channels to transmit and receive data. 802.11 n 5GHz networks use 40MHz wide channels, and 802.11 ac 5GHz networks use 80MHz wide channels. When you're connected to your wireless access point with a 2.4GHz connection on a much more narrow channel, the speeds are slower than when connecting at 5GHz when you're very close to the router but stay fairly consistent as you move further away. 5GHz connections, especially wireless ac connections, have a much more limited range because the signal strength drops off quickly.

To offset this, millimeter wave 5G will require much small cell sites that are much closer to each other. This is the only way to keep the ultra-high frequencies safe enough to use, because if the signal gain was increased enough to allow for long-distances at those frequencies some serious health issues would occur. Communication over these radio bands isn't something new, so all the pitfalls are well known and the right precautions have been taken.

What phones support 5G?

2019 is the year that you'll finally be able to purchase a 5G phone. So far, the following 5G-capable devices have been announced:

  • Samsung Galaxy S10 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy Fold
  • LG V50 ThinQ
  • Huawei Mate X
  • OnePlus 5G Phone
  • Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G
  • ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G

When do I get 5G?

  • AT&T says it will have a true 5G network live in 19 cities and has test sites up and running in 12 cities across the U.S. This is in addition to its "5G Enhanced" 4G LTE network the company is also pushing.
  • Sprint is repurposing its current 2.5GHz network for 5G and is currently retrofitting its cell sites as well as making all new sites "5G-ready".
  • T-Mobile is using both its 600MHz network and 28GHz network bands to have a 5G network in place sometime in 2019, with a complete nationwide rollout by 2020.
  • Verizon is using millimeter wave 5G for its current home 5G broadband and says it will have a mobile network in place sometime during 2019.

Of course, what all that really means is that you will need new devices in order to see any sort of 5G network for yourself. Qualcomm has designed chips that will be ready for 5G in its current form and will also be ready as the tech matures and minor changes are made. We also know that Samsung is making 5G phones for Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint as well as carriers in Europe, OnePlus will have Europes first 5G-ready phone to launch on EE sometime this spring, and that Huawei is ready for 5G in Asia as well as the places in North America where the company still does business. By mid-2019 seeing every phone manufacturer talking about a 5G phone shouldn't surprise anyone.

The 5G Moto Mod: Everything you need to know

We've also seen a few mobile hotspots that can leverage these new (and in many cases unavailable) 5G networks by Netgear and others. This drives home one very important 5G feature that doesn't get enough attention — it can compete with wired broadband internet. A fully built network in the millimeter wave range of the spectrum can have as much capacity as a wired network using today's tech. And unlike a fiber-based network, there won't be a group of workers with a backhoe in your yard installing it.

What this all means right now

Your phone doesn't need a faster network; at least until someone invents a reason why it does. 5G means that someone will, but only once it becomes commonplace. But it really isn't about speeds.

In the short term, 5G benefits the carrier as much or more than the consumer. The initial costs of new equipment will be offset by the savings over maintaining the current aging infrastructure, the ability to actually compete with in-home broadband service without resorting to fiber will gain more customers, all 5G devices in the U.S. will be carrier-specific, and some of the costs will be passed on to the customer like always.

Long term is a different story. The sheer amount of data that can be transferred at high speeds means that 5G will be able to do a lot more than bring fast downloads to your phone. Distance learning, connected devices that work with other connected devices as well as connected municipalities and towns, and many other applications that need high bandwidth and low latency are just a dream today because there isn't a network that can handle them. 5G might just change all of that.

Qualcomm's latest chips bring flagship features to the mid-range category

Qualcomm is adding support for 5x optical zoom and HDR gaming on its mid-range Snapdragon chipsets.

Qualcomm has dominated the mid-range segment in recent years thanks to the strong performance of the Snapdragon 6xx and 7xx series, and the chip vendor is making key updates in this category for 2019. The Snapdragon 665 will take over from the Snapdragon 636 and 660, and the mid-range is getting two new additions in the 7xx series: the Snapdragon 730 and 730G.

All three chipsets sport considerable upgrades in terms of performance and AI capabilities, and Qualcomm is also adding support for 5x optical zoom as standard. The Snapdragon 730 and 730G in particular are intriguing as they bring several flagship-tier features for the first time to the 7xx series, including Vulkan 1.1 graphics, Wi-Fi 6, HDR gaming, fourth-generation AI engine, and Spectra 350 ISP.

Qualcomm is looking to continue the momentum in the sub-$500 category with the new chipsets, and while we haven't seen much in the way of devices based on the Snapdragon 7xx series in the U.S., Qualcomm has confirmed that a device with a 7-series chipset will debut in the country "imminently."

In addition to the new chipsets, Qualcomm is debuting Cloud AI 100, a new solution for AI inference processing in the cloud.

Snapdragon 730/730G — HDR gaming and 4th-gen AI engine

The Snapdragon 730 and 730G are designed to offer flagship-tier performance in the mid-range segment. We've already seen this with the Snapdragon 710 in the likes of the Nokia 8.1, and the 730/730G deliver considerable uptick in performance from last year's platform and bring Qualcomm's latest technologies to this category.

First up is the AI engine: both the Snapdragon 730 and 730G sport Qualcomm's fourth-generation AI engine, with Tensor accelerator cores that provide a 2x boost in AI-related tasks when seen against the 710. Both chipsets also support Wi-Fi 6 with 2x2 MU-MIMO, X15 LTE modems that offer up to 800Mbps download speeds, Dual SIM Dual VoLTE, as well as VoWiFi.

The new chipsets enable higher-res displays, Quick Charge 4.0+, 8GB RAM, and camera sensors up to 192MP.

The Snapdragon 730 supports displays up to 2520 x 1080, with the 730G compatible with QHD+ (3360 x 1440) resolutions. Both chipsets support Vulkan 1.1 graphics and feature Qualcomm's audio-related aptX Adaptive and Aqstic codecs to deliver an immersive audio experience. The new chipsets are also compatible with Quick Charge 4.0+, Bluetooth 5.0, and up to 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM at 1866MHz.

Another new addition is the Spectra 350 image signal processor, which offers better depth sensing, support for triple cameras — ultra-wide, portrait and telephoto lenses — and the ability to capture photos and videos in HEIF.

The Snapdragon 730 and 730G support single 48MP camera sensors with multi frame noise reduction, or up to 36MP with zero shutter lag. Similarly, dual cameras up to 22MP are supported, and the platforms also have compatibility with sensors that go up to 192MP in snapshot mode. When it comes to video, you get 4K at 30fps with HDR10, 1080p at up to 120fps, 720p at 240fps, and the ability to shoot 4K HDR portrait mode video with bokeh. The 730G also allows 720p at 960fps.

The Snapdragon 730 and 730G will turbocharge mid-range phones in 2019.

The platforms are fabricated on TSMC's 8nm node, and are powered by Kryo 470 cores and Adreno 618 — another first in the 7xx series. Qualcomm is sticking to a 2+6 design, with two high-performance 2.20GHz cores based on the Cortex A76 joined by six 1.80GHz energy-efficient cores based on the Cortex A55 platform.

Qualcomm is touting a huge 35% uptick in CPU performance from the Snapdragon 710, and 25% increase in visuals performance thanks to the Adreno 618 GPU. And with the Snapdragon 730G aimed at a gaming audience, it has an overclocked Adreno 618 GPU that delivers 15% better performance over and above what you get on the Snapdragon 730.

Another differentiator for the Snapdragon 730G is HDR gaming that will deliver "extreme realism with rich graphics and cinema-quality processing with over 1 billion shades of color." Qualcomm also says its in-house game studio collaborated with leading game publishers to optimize best-selling titles for the Snapdragon 730G platform, and that its Jank Reducer feature will remove jitter by up to 90%.

All in all, the Snapdragon 730 and 730G offer a slew of exciting features in the mid-range segment, and it'll be interesting to see how close the real-world performance is to the flagship Snapdragon 855.

Snapdragon 665 — budget devices are about to get much better

The Snapdragon 665 also has several upgrades over its predecessor. It has a third-generation AI engine that's twice as fast as the one on the Snapdragon 660, and the Spectra 165 ISP introduces AI-assisted camera features. Like the Snapdragon 730/730G, the 665 supports Vulkan 1.1 and aptX Adaptive and Aqstic codecs.

There's support for dual cameras up to 16MP, single 25MP cameras with zero shutter lag, and 48MP sensors in snapshot mode. The chipset is compatible with three camera configurations, and offers 4K video at 30fps and 720p at 240fps. Other features include Wi-Fi ac with MU-MIMO, FHD+ display support (2520x1080), Quick Charge 3.0, X12 LTE modem with 600Mbps download speeds, Dual SIM Dual Standby, VoWiFi, and up to 8GB of RAM.

The Snapdragon 665 is built on a 11nm node, and it has octa-core Kryo 260 cores that go up to 2.2GHz as well as an Adreno 610 GPU.

Bringing AI to the cloud

Alongside the new chipsets, Qualcomm is debuting a Cloud AI 100 solution that facilitates "distributed intelligence from the cloud to the client edge and all points in between." Qualcomm says the Cloud AI 100 offers a 10x performance boost over the most advanced AI inference solutions in the market today, with the 7nm chip also bringing power savings.

It works with the leading software stacks in the industry — including PyTorch, Glow, TensorFlow, Keras, and ONNX — and is slated to make its way to the market in the latter half of the year.

As for the new mobile chipsets, the Snapdragon 665 will be aimed at devices that cost between $200 to $300, with the Snapdragon 730 and 730G targeting the $300 to $450 segments. Qualcomm says the new platforms are commercially ready, and that the first wave of devices based on the new chipsets will be rolling out in mid-2019.
