4 tips for getting the most battery life out of your Huawei Watch 2

The Huawei Watch 2 is one of the best Android Wear watches currently available, and it manages surprisingly good endurance out of its 420mAh battery. Still, for heavy users who are constantly checking notifications and flipping through apps, it might not be enough to last through a busy work day. Here are a few tips on how to make the most of the Huawei Watch 2's battery.

Turn down your brightness

This one's pretty obvious, but the brighter your display, the faster your battery will drain. In most cases, the Huawei Watch 2 can handle automatic brightness adjustment on its own, but particularly if you're in a dark room, you might benefit from manually dimming the display.

To do this, just swipe down from the watch face and jump into the settings. Tap Display, then Adjust brightness, and choose any level from 1 to 5. Even in fairly bright rooms, the lowest setting can be enough, but keep in mind that switching away from auto brightness can lead to added hassle once you step out into direct sunlight.

Use a black watch face

The Huawei Watch 2 features an AMOLED display, which can be a huge advantage when it comes to battery life. Unlike LCD displays, which emit light evenly across the entire panel, AMOLED displays can achieve perfect black by simply not backlighting black pixels. In other words, the more black pixels being used, the less power it takes to display it.

The Huawei Watch 2 already takes advantage of this with its always-on display, but you can further the benefits by using a primarily black watch face. The pre-installed Elements Digital watch face offers options for a black background with either blue or green elements, but if that's not your style it's easy enough to download other watch faces from the Play Store.

Turn off always-on display

Those power savings we just talked about when using a black watch face? They come in handy for always-on display mode too, but while it's helpful to only display a few elements on the screen, an even better way to cut back on battery drain is to turn off the always-on display altogether.

From the watch face, access the Settings app by swiping down and tapping the corresponding icon. Tap Display, then scroll to the bottom of the list and tap Always-on screen. Make sure the blue dot within the circle to the left turns grey, indicating that the feature has been disabled.

In a pinch? Use Theater Mode

If your battery percentage has reached the single digits, you can turn on Theater Mode as a last-ditch effort. Theater Mode conserves power by muting notifications, turning off the display, and basically turning off the entire watch — turned back on by hitting the power button.

To enable Theater Mode, swipe down from the watch face and tap the box with the diagonal line through it. The Watch 2 will instruct you to press the power button in order to disable the mode, then the display will turn off. Keep in mind that while leaving the display off will minimize power consumption, Theater Mode won't stop battery drain completely — the watch still needs to carry out background tasks like maintaining its Bluetooth connection.

Google Photos is the best gift you can give your family this year

The holidays are a time for taking lots of photos. Make sure you know how to keep them all safe!

Whether you're out with your friends or spending time with your family unwrapping presents, there's a good chance you'll be taking a lot of photos this holiday season. But there's also the chance that someone has a bit too much eggnog, breaks their phone, and — poof — there go your fun new memories. That's why this year might finally be the time to get your family on board with Google Photos.

Backing up your photos has never been easier. Once you set up Google Photos, it works in the background to automatically upload your shots to the cloud as you take them. The best part is that it's not just limited to Android users. Google Photos is also available on iOS, and its unlimited storage option gives it a big advantage over iCloud.

Setting up Google Photos

Setting up Google Photos is as easy as opening the app and tapping Done during the initial prompt. By default, the app will upload your images at a slightly reduced quality, offering free unlimited storage, but if you prefer to keep your memories in full resolution, just jump into the Back Up and Sync settings and adjust the Upload Size. Keep in mind that full-res uploads count against your Google Drive storage.

From the Back Up and Sync settings, you can also decide whether you want your photos to upload over the cellular network or through Wi-Fi only. The former ensures that your photos are safely backed up almost immediately after you take them, but of course, it comes at the cost of running up your carrier data plan. If you're blessed with unlimited data, flip on cellular backups and shoot away!

Google Photos: Everything you need to know!

Finding your photos later

One of the best parts of Google Photos is its ability to automatically sort your photos by people, places, and even objects in the shot. This is a great way to quickly find that awesome picture you took of your niece opening her favorite present so you can show the rest of the family.

At the top of the Albums tab is a horizontally scrolling list of features Google's AI service was able to detect in your photos. Tap People & Pets to find thumbnails of all of your friends and photo subjects, linking to every photo and video you've taken of them. From within an individual person's collection, you can add a name, change the featured photo used in the thumbnail, or remove erroneous results.

Similarly, Places utilizes geotagging to sort your photos by cities, counties, or even specific points of interest like universities or malls. The Things category uses the same machine learning as People & Pets to detect objects and scenarios like dogs and cats, skyscrapers, selfies, concerts, etc. Just like with People & Pets, you can remove results, but you might be surprised by the accuracy of the software.

Turning your photos into gifts

On top of cataloging your memories, Google Photos also lets you immortalize them by creating personalized Photo Books. You can choose up to 100 images from your Google Photos library, organize them any way you wish, and customize the cover and spine. The Photo Books are made using high-quality prints, and make for excellent holiday gifts.

Photo Books

Start the holiday season right

Google Photos makes it so easy to back up your pictures that anyone can do it, regardless of their level of experience with a smartphone. This holiday season, take the time to help your family members set up Google Photos and protect them from losing important shots — lasting memories are the gifts that keep on giving.

Samsung Galaxy S9: Rumors, Specs, Release Date, and More!

The Galaxy S9 is on its way, and this is everything we know so far about Samsung's next flagship.

Even today, there's no denying that the Galaxy S8 is still one of the best-looking phones on the market. Its Quad HD AMOLED Infinity Display is a thing of beauty, its camera takes excellent photos, and even Samsung's software is finally enjoyable for once. All of the greatness found with the S8 has put a lot of pressure and expectations on the S9, and although it probably won't be as big of an upgrade as the S8 was from the S7, it'll still likely be one of the best phones of 2018. Here's everything we know!

The Galaxy S9 will look a lot like the S8

If you were hoping for a big design upgrade with the S9, you better stop now before you get your hopes up too much. A CAD render of the Galaxy S9 reveals what will most likely be the final look for the device, and although it's not a big change from the S8, that's really not a bad thing. The S9 will have extremely tiny bezels around its display with a metal frame and glass back, but there is a change to the placement of the fingerprint sensor.

We still don't understand Samsung's reasoning for putting the fingerprint sensor on the S8 where it did, but with the S9, it will be placed below the camera lens. In other words, unlocking a Samsung phone with your finger will no longer make you want to rip out your hair. Woohoo!

Bezels are going to keep shrinking 😮

Speaking of that Infinity Display, the S9 is expected to make it even more impressive than it already is on the S8. The screen-to-body ratio of the Galaxy S8+ is still a thing of beauty at 84-percent, but according to a tip that SamMobile received, the S9+ will kick things up a notch with a screen-to-body ratio of 90-percent. A six-percent increase might not sound big on paper, but this will theoretically result in a virtually nonexistent bezel for the S9's chin and a top bezel that's even smaller than the bottom one found on the S8. I don't think we've ever heard anyone complain about the S8 having big bezels, so the fact that the S9 could reduce their size even more admittedly has us quite giddy.

The S9 could launch as soon as February

Before its announcement on April 21, the Galaxy S8 passed through the FCC in the U.S. in early March. All phones get certified by the FCC about a month or two before they're unveiled, and this can be used as a way to determine when an official announcement is coming.

The Galaxy S9 made its way to the FCC's doorstep on December 27, and this is a strong indicator that we'll see the phone announced in either late January or early February. Along with this, a list showing all Snapdragon 845-powered phones for 2018 indicates that the S9/S9+ are slated for a February launch as well. This is mostly speculation, but we'd be very surprised if we have to wait until March or April to get our hands on Samsung's latest.

Iris scanning improvements to take on Face ID

Samsung might have been first to market with face/eye scanning technology as a way for biometrically unlocking your phone compared to Apple, but it's no secret that Face ID is superior to Samsung's iris scanning technology that's found on the Galaxy S8. Unsurprisingly, Samsung will be improving its iris scanning system on the S9 to either meet or beat Apple's solution.

A report from The Korea Herald says that Samsung will be upgrading the front-facing camera on the S9 from 2MP up to 3MP, and this will allow for faster scanning even when users are wearing glasses or in dark environments. The time it takes to unlock the S9 using iris scanning will be shorter than the current one-second time ont he S8, and there will also be improvements on the software side of things to make iris scanning just as (if not more) secure than Face ID.

Only the S9+ will get dual rear-cameras

Only the larger S9 will get dual-camera love, but each will have a much more accessible fingerprint scanner.

Samsung's first phone to ship with dual cameras was the Note 8, and as expected, this is a feature that'll trickle over to the S9. However, only the larger Galaxy S9+ is reported to receive this treatment. The smaller S9 will retain a single camera, and while we don't expect it to take bad photos, this disparity between the smaller and larger variants is new for Samsung. On that same note, the S9+ will also receive a small performance boost with an upgraded 6GB of RAM compared to the S9's 4GB count.

Thankfully, no matter which variant of the S9 you choose, the fingerprint sensor will be moved below the camera and no longer horrible to use.

Don't worry – the 3.5mm headphone jack will remain

The 3.5mm headphone jack is here to stay 🙏

One trend we've seen throughout 2017 is the rapid removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack. This is something that the likes of Apple, Google, Motorola, and HTC have all been more than willing to follow suit with, but we shouldn't have to worry about this with the S9.

Venture Beat's same source supposedly confirmed that the Galaxy S9 will keep the headphone jack, and this lines up with a leaked case render for the phone that shows a covered section for the coveted port. Additionally, the CAD renders mentioned above also show the S9 with this.

Battery increase of 200 mAh 🔋

There's not much to dislike about the Galaxy S8, but aside from the phone's awkward fingerprint sensor, one area that can be an annoyance is battery life. The S8's battery isn't bad, but it's also not the best we saw on a phone in 2017.

According to someone that supposedly has a test unit of the upcoming device, the Galaxy S9 will come equipped with a slightly larger battery of 3,200 mAh. That's not a huge increase compared to the S8's 3,000 mAh pack, but a larger battery is still a larger battery. Additionally, this larger pack should also be accompanied by Quick Charge 3.0.

512GB of storage?

Yep. When you go to buy a Galaxy S9 next year, you may very well have the option of purchasing one with 512GB of internal storage.

Samsung announced on December 5 that it had begun mass-producing the mobile industry's first 512GB chips, and although not directly mentioned, we wouldn't be surprised to see this extra storage make its way to the S9/S9+. Larger internal storage will always have the benefit over expansions with microSD cards, so with this much space to work with, it'll be interesting to see if Samsung tries axing the microSD card slot like it did with the S6 in 2015.

It's "unlikely" the S9 will be unveiled at CES

Samsung typically waits until after CES to hold a separate event for announcing its latest Galaxy S devices, but some rumors have popped up indicating that Samsung would take a different approach this year and give us a teaser of what to expect at Las Vegas this January.

However, according to a spokesperson from Samsung, "it is unlikely" that the Galaxy S9 will make any sort of appearance at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show. This is something we were already fairly skeptical about, but now we can finally lay those rumors to rest.

Updated 12/29/2017 – Added possibility of February launch.

Is OnePlus working on a Sandstone OnePlus 5T?

You have our attention.

The OnePlus One is a memorable phone for a lot of different reasons, but one thing about the device that's always stuck with me is its Sandstone back. OnePlus used its Sandstone material on the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2, and its combination of being grippy and smooth at the same time made it one of the most unique phone materials to date.

Don't get too excited just yet, but it looks like OnePlus may be bringing it back for the 5T.

OnePlus recently uploaded a video to its YouTube channel called "What's in the Box?", and it shows a handful of different people feeling a mystery product inside a covered box. It's never revealed what exactly they're touching, but the individuals in the clip say that it's "smooth", "a little bit textured", "like a stone", and "quite grippy." As if that wasn't on the nose enough, one person even says "It might be the OnePlus One Sandstone."

While it's entirely possible that OnePlus could just be teasing some random accessory with a Sandstone texture, we're inclined to believe that it is, in fact, a OnePlus 5T.

The Star Wars version of the 5T that OnePlus released in select markets stands out the most for its white color and red alert slider, but one thing that's not really noticeable in pictures/renders its Sandstone material on the back. As Harish noted in his hands-on with the phone:

Unlike the glossy metal back on the standard variant of the OnePlus 5T, the Star Wars edition comes with a Sandstone finish à la OnePlus One and OnePlus 2. The textured coating makes the device incredibly grippy, and is generally a huge improvement over the standard 5T.

OnePlus says it'll "unbox the mystery" in January 2018, and until then, we'll be over here crossing our fingers for a Sandstone 5T.

These are all the Android devices updated to fix KRACK Wi-Fi vulnerability

If you want to keep your info safe in the post-KRACK world, these are the Android devices you need to be using.

In October 2017, a big vulnerability with the WPA2 Wi-Fi standard was discovered. Referred to as KRACK, this is a vulnerability that essentially makes open season on all your personal data when connected to a Wi-Fi network using WPA2.

You can find all of the information about KRACK in Jerry's guide here, but when talking about newer Android devices specifically, it's important to note the following:

On phones running Android 6.0 Marshmallow and newer, the KRACK vulnerability can force the Wi-Fi connection to create an absurdly easy-to-crack encryption key of 00:00:00:00:00. With something so simple, it's easy for an outsider to read all of the traffic coming to and from a client, like a smartphone or laptop.

Attackers can't necessarily use KRACK to steal your bank account information or passwords, but it's still something that you want to protect yourself from as much as possible. Both Wi-Fi routers and devices connected to them need to receive a software update in order to be free form potential attacks, but at least in the case of Android phones and tablets, these are the gadgets that are safe to use.

Best PlayStation 4 Accessories as of December 2017

Your PS4 is fine on its own, but these accessories can help complete the experience!

My Momma told me that the key to any good outfit is the right accessories.

That's not true. She never said that, but it sounds like the sort of thing that some mom somewhere said. The same, however, is certainly true for gaming setups. The right gaming accessories can spell the difference between just playing video games and having a gaming experience.

There are so many options when it comes to accessories for the PlayStation 4. We've curated the best of the best to help take your PS4 experience to the next level!

Headset

So the kids or the roommates are sound asleep and you're ready to blast some baddies with a rocket launcher. The only problem is that you want to blast the volume while you do it. There is a solution to your woes. Pick up an Arctis 7 Steel Series headset and you will never have to worry about waking people up again. It's has everything you might want from a gaming headset for your PS4: great sound, good comfort level, lag-free wireless audio, and a killer battery life. Happy silent gaming!

See at Amazon

Charger

I know what you're thinking and yes there is a way to charge your PS4 controllers and display them stylishly. When you're kicked back on the couch with your feet up you can look over and rest easy knowing that your controllers are charging and lookin' sweet when you see the soft blue glow of this dual controller charging stand.

See at Amazon

VR

File this under pricey but game-changing. Are you ready to take PlayStation gaming to the next level? If the answer is yes then you might as well consider the accessory to beat all accessories. The PlayStation VR will afford you the opportunity to at last take the helm of a Starfleet ship, climb the mountains of Skyrim, or get the pants scared off of you in Resident Evil. The world of VR is yours for the taking.

Fighting Stick

Maybe VR isn't right for you. Maybe you like your gaming experience to feel more like an evening playing Streetfighter 2 Turbo: Hyper Fighting at the local pizza parlor. The problem is that you will never come close to that experience with the standard PlayStation 4 controller. What you need is a real deal fighting stick. Pick up this Qanba Obsidian fighting stick and you will be ready to take on all comers. And with the satisfying click of Sanwa buttons you will be in fighting game heaven.

See at Amazon

Steering Wheel

All right, all right, so maybe fighting games are not your raison d'etre. You're more of a pedal to the metal, rubber meets the road sort of gamer. You love racing games and much like your fighting game loving cousins, it's all about the controller. If you're going to go all in with racing games you might as well go all in with your controller and pick up a Driving Force G29 racing wheel. At last, you will be able to brake and hit the gas with your feet the way good ol' Hank Ford intended.

See at Amazon

The great part about accessories is that it allows you to make the game experience unique to you. If you're looking for something more then you don't have to live with what comes out of the box. Happy gaming and happy accessorizing!
